They may have fuzzy ears adorned with a gentleman's cap or a lady's bonnet, or they may be sporting a more contemporary style with tennis shoes and a jersey boasting a prized sports team.
Either way, the sea of teddy bears at the teddy bear picnic at the Morgan Opera House Saturday will make all their people proud as they are adorned with ribbons awarded for each of their unique qualities.
“We may award the brownest, the most loved, the most Pooh-like or the best dressed,” said Sandy Goth, director of the Aurora Free Library. “It's always fun to see what the favorite is.”
The event will start with a bring-your-own brown bag lunch outside of the library at noon; lemonade will be provided. After stomachs are full and bears are overstuffed, the show will begin inside the opera house.
Children and their teddy bears will marvel at the talents of comic showman Moreland the Magician as he mystifies both child and bear.
David Moreland, selected as this year's entertainer for the annual Teddy Bear Picnic, has wowed audiences nationwide.
He has appeared in films and television shows including “Legally Blonde,” “Friends,” “Seinfeld” and “Becker.” Moreland and his rabbit, Chester, promise to be a laugh-a-minute as they perform magic tricks and storytelling.
The Teddy Bear Picnic has been an annual event at the library for more than 20 years.
It is traditionally a conclusion to the summer reading program as a celebratory event to congratulate the children's hard work throughout the summer vacation months.
The event concludes with the bear judging, where no bear will be left without an award.
“It's fun to see different ones each year,” Goth explained. “In earlier years, there were a lot of beanie bears, now there are more build-a-bear types, where they're not always bears, but other animals as well.”
Goth explained that at previous picnics bears were judged in categories.
“But now everyone receives some type of recognition,” she said.
Many bears have worn fur from years of cuddling, or missing eyes from numerous adventures.
Then there are brand new bears that have years of love awaiting them.
Each bear has a story, and all the bears are welcome to picnic in style at the opera house with their favorite child.
