Auburn landfill a valuable resource to city patrons

Tuesday, August 7, 2007 11:28 AM EDT

As chairman of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, I would like to comment on mayoral candidate Michael Quill#'s position regarding the Auburn Landfill. Stated on Mr. Quill's Web site is a suggestion that we study the possibility of selling the landfill. As chairman, I find this suggestion to be both foolhardy and appalling. The Auburn City Landfill is one of the city#'s biggest sources of revenue; one with the potential for additional revenue growth in the future.
In a time in which other cities are scrambling to find places to dispose of their trash, and are at the mercy of private haulers, we hold an invaluable ace up our sleeve. The landfill brings much needed revenue into our city, and allows us to keep our dumping fees low. During the 2006-07 budget process, the elimination of more than 20 jobs was threatened.

Councilor David Dempsey suggested raising the yearly tonnage limit at the landfill, in order to generate more revenue. This idea, only possible due to Auburn#'s ownership of the landfill, resulted in the saving of those jobs.

The citizens of Auburn enjoy low cost trash disposal when compared to citizens of neighboring towns. If the landfill is sold, and trash collection becomes privatized, the cost to the taxpayer will increase significantly. As chairman, I urge the voters to please consider the issues and the candidate's platforms.

" A landfill may seen like a great idea now, but it is a time bomb for the future. DEP laws are not going to get easier in the future but more stringent. When that landfill meets its end of usefulness it will cost millions to cap it. Who is going to foot that bill? Maybe not you, if you are a senior citizen but the rest of your younger family members will have the legacy of a huge bill and a big tax burden. And as regulations grow more difficult the price tag will be higher. I feel that a study may be a good idea. At least a fund should be created for this future expense. "

" Mr. Colavito, I have a question. In your informative letter to the editor, you state that "If the landfill is sold, and trash collection becomes privatized, the cost to the taxpayer will increase significantly." Which taxpayers are we referring to exactly? In your committee's past findings (as published in The Citizen and the Post Standard) about trash, and per-bag fees, and adding it to the property taxes, etc... people who owned a home assesed at $70,000 (or was it $80,000?) or more stood to break even or even pay less; while those property owners whose property values fell below that amount were going to pay more (in fees or taxes). Your response to that in the Citizen? "Well, we did the best we could." Yes, Mr. Colavito, you did. You absolutely did the best you could for those in your neighborhood, and those whose homes are assesed in value near yours. What about the rest of us property owners? Are we to belive that you are suddenly concerned with us? I think not. I TRULY believe that this was just a cheap attempt to disparage Mike Quill, and your own twisted way to try and hinder his campaign. If you have all the answers, why then didn't you run for Mayor, or even city council? I'll tell you why. Running for public office takes bravery, fortitude, and a fair amount of self-examination of conscience. I don't believe you possess the first two, and I doubt you could handle the third. I'm very sorry that you and Quill aren't the best of friends. There is nothing I can do about that. However, the citizens of our city have just as long a memory as you. They remember your quote as I do (....did the best we could), and they won't forget. As always, it is just Colavito looking out for Colavito's best interests; and to heck with everyone else. "

" Good point Jerry! You must know all that from the years you spent at the fire department, right? "

" You are 100% correct Rick, Quill's web site proposes to waste more taxpayer money on useless studies. We need this landfill if this community is going to continue to exist. If we sell the landfill we will be at the mercy of the individual who bought it. Selling and or leasing the landfill is a stupid idea. I wonder if Mike Quill would recommend the recommendations of the studies concerning his fire department? Studies that cost us $25,000 simply because Mike Quill stated he was not qualified to do a study on his own department. Sounds like a cop out to me. But the issue is, when Chief Calarco and Chief Maywalt ran the department there was a 12 man minimum and the chief was one of the twelve. Now we have less industries, and less people living in our city, and yet, at Chief Quill insistence, the minimum staffing level has increased to 15. Sounds crazy doesnt it? Well so does his candidacy. If we want to survive as a community we need a mayor with vision, and it certainly isn't Quill. "
