Cayugas just don't get it

It has been said that if you tell the same lie often enough, it will eventually become accepted as the truth.
A good example is the Cayuga Indian Nation. The Cayugas apparently believe that if they continuously talk about New York as if it belongs to them, we'll eventually begin to believe it.

The courts have already said that so-called ancestral land doesn't belong to the Indians, it belongs to the people who own it. It's private property, which is one of the key principles upon which this country was founded. But the tribes simply ignore the courts and offer a continuous stream of “deals” in which they'll agree to cap the amount of land that they'll put into a trust, which means they won't have to pay taxes on it.

Will somebody please tell me why this isn't the most ridiculous farce you've ever heard of? The tribe can't put a cap on anything, can't put anything into a trust, can't decide to pay or not to pay taxes on anything. They don't own the land in the first place. The land belongs to us and the courts agree.

But the Cayugas just keep telling the same pack of lies, and there are some politicians who are actually buying into this joke. The Cayugas need to realize that all bets are off. We own the land, not them; we have the right to block the building of gambling casinos if that's what we decide.

If you want land in New York, then you have to buy it like anybody else and pay taxes on it. Any so-called deal that they offer to the contrary isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Anyway, why would we want to cut a deal with the Cayugas on the side when we keep winning in the courts? That's crazy! These deals are a weird kind of blackmail that have no bite in them. Why would you consider giving your money to a blackmailer who can't do anything to you? They want to keep fighting it out in the courts, let's go! We'll keep winning.

There's no way any court is going to take New York land away from the rightful owners and hand it over to somebody else because we conquered the new world 200 years ago. Sorry, but it's time to move on.

By the way, you know the land they want to become sovereign means that not only would they not have to pay taxes on it, but they can also open lots of tax-free businesses, which will drive our own community merchants into bankruptcy.

Casinos are another issue. But no agreement about casinos should include turning over any land to the tax-free nation. We need to get all over our politicians before they cave in. No tax-free land, no sovereign nation, no deals.

" Try to save some expense to the trash program and allow 4 clear bags to every household free. After that charge for a tag for every additional bag used. No charge for recyclables. If the trash is not sorted properly don't pick it up. If the garbage piles up and is not tagged or sorted correctly then pick it up with a city truck and charge $100 to haul it away billable to the resident. Charging by people and not by trash usage is not fair is is stupid and vindictive to large families. "

" I bet anonymous lives alone.. Best way to increase $$ for trash it to use TRASH TAGS as I keep saying! Tag every bag just like everywhere else does, THAT is a fair solution! Just call up City Hall in Ithaca, they will explain it to you, they charge everyone for every bag they throw out and collect the money! "

" Equality, I finally see some one that writes something that makes sense. Most of the other 22 have nothing to do with the issue. Of a sovereign nation with in the borders of Cayuga and Seneca counties. Not to lessen the fact in the USA "

" There are people that understand the homeland of the Cayuga / Iroquois was in Canada, and the Cayuga have a reservation at Grand River, Canada where they ran to after losing the American Revolution. They also have a use right reservation on the Cattraugus Seneca Reservation in New York State. The fact they relocated here about 1550 for 150 years and claim this as their aboriginal territory is comparable to a B & B claiming George Washington slept here. Plus, the tribe can not place land into trust into a pre-emptive rights colony state. That's why they're trying to buy a restricted fee 10,000 acre reservation with rights to a casino closer to NYC. It's a billion dollar deal and they're offering the counties fifteen million in exchange. The fifteen million won't replace the lost property taxes of the lake property they purchase to take off the tax rolls. Couple that with lost tax paying businesses like one who testified at a recent Seneca County board meeting. After building a business for their children to take over, they sold out three hundred thousand dollars under appraised value due to inequality under the law creating unfair business advantages for the tribes. We know the Cayuga tribe will pursue. All they have to lose is casino backer's money. No sovereign nation, no deals. Let the courts decide the final outcome. At least the courts have to adhere to the U.S. Constitution. "

" Blaming ALL catholic churches for pedophiles is ignorant-if you believe every church should suffer then you are saying EVERY SCHOOL Teacher, Coach, Boy Scout leader, grandfather, father, uncles, aunts,nephews,cousins,brothers,sisters--BASICALLY every HUMAN is a sicko! So untrue! The Sicko person should be punished --NOT all that are in his/her profession! "

" I am not against the cayugans BUYING the land and being tax-free-like the churches and buisneses that is a right you can file to get a tax-free paper for. However I am against them arguing this in court over and over when they have LOST! Judy is correct that the Indians are now trying to fight for the LOST in court lands town by town>which the Indians keep losing the votes again and again..The counties dont OWE them anything as it was stated in the courts--just as germany doesnt owe for the Nazi torturous ways, WE dont owe the families of slaves, and McDonalds doesnt owe because you ate there and are obese! Ridiculas lawsuits! "

" as much as me and Owascoman have diasagreed in the past, I agree with him on this one. The Cayugas are not asking for much, and for some reason Judy cannot seem to find anything but hatred for them. Why shouldn't they try to retreive lands lost to them hundreds of years ago? If you lost your wallet years ago, and found the person who had it, you would try to get it back too... "

Unknown... wrote on Jul 31, 2007 7:33 PM:

" Apparently, Owascoman supports the Cayugas trying to take land from people that have worked for it & paid taxes for it for years. So what if it was the Indian's ancestor's homeland. My ancestors came from Ireland, should all the Irish people go make land claims there too? That's about what this amounts to. Why should we bend over for them?? All they want to do is take money from us. And what if the government DID tax the churches? What are they going to do with that extra money?? LINE THEIR POCKETS WITH IT. So what good is that?? It'll just make greedy politicians that much richer. The churches are having a hard enough time as it is trying to get by, without adding that extra burden on them. Some of you people need to wake up. "

" ABSOLUTELY, Owascoman! TAX THE CHURCHES!! They've already crossed the line FAR too often on endorsements of political candidates and issues, like the Immigration debate. If they want to play politics, they should play by the RULE OF LAW! BTW, if you really want to help, join "Americans United for the Seperation of Church and State"! They're leading the charge to keep the Churches accountable! "
