Each Monday, The Citizen features someone from the Finger Lakes community.
This week, we spotlight Sandra Philips, portrait and decorative artist at Skaneateles Artisans.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. The interaction with the artists. In isolation your work is nowhere near what it is when you're around others; it gives you ideas and makes you want to work more. How we play off each other and support each other, the visual experience, interacting with customers and the opportunities to showcase.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. It's hard to find one; we only just opened. I suppose finding enough time to produce inventory.
Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?
A. I'm pretty close to it. I'd like to own a gallery, and it would include my own works. The place itself isn't as important as having a place where art is greatly appreciated and sought after, and the people in Skaneateles certainly appear to appreciate art.
Q. What's the best way to relax after a tough day?
A. Painting.
Q. What do you like most about the Finger Lakes?
A. The scenery in any season, maybe not March. It's beautiful in all seasons.
Q. If you had the choice of meeting any three people in the world, who would they be and why?
A. Mother Theresa, because I want to know how she felt at the end of the day when she was so tired. Ann Sullivan, because she never gave up her belief in Helen Keller and just taught and taught. And Hillary Clinton, because she maintained her strength under the barrage of criticism, regardless of what people said or thought. I believe she cares about wanting to do good things for this country, and I admire her as a person.
Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A. In a home designed around my studio, as a full-time artist traveling regularly.
Q. If you were to win the lottery tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd do?
A. Build a house and
studio.
Q. What would people who think they know you be most surprised to find out about you?
A. That I'm insecure about my art.
Q. Do you have any special plans for the next few months?
A. Working in the shop, building the shop, supporting each other. Being excited about letting everyone come to see it. I think it will be a special place.
