Middle-aged youth

The next band to play in the Gazebo Gathering series in Weedsport may be Too Old 2 Rap but they are certainly not too old to have fun and sound good while playing.
Composed of five self-professed “middle-aged teenagers,” the band members are all about what happened after Fats Domino reigned king and before Ludacris hit the airwaves. In short, they love the '80s.

Bill Austin on lead guitar (electric and acoustic) and vocals, Dan Bates on bass and vocals, Andy Bates on sound gear, Sue Ferlenda on vocals and the occasional bass and rhythm guitar, drummer James Marshall and Wendy Bates on keys, vocals, tambourine and cow bell make up the group.

Weedsport Free Library director Cheryl Austin put the Gazebo Gathering series together in the mid-1990s as an application for an arts council grant. The project was funded and the series committee approached local organizations for additional help. Support came in from several organizations and the series was in business.

Gazebo Gathering concerts are free events and are always held on Tuesday evenings at the gazebo on North Seneca Street. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and can expect a wide variety of entertainers for all ages.

“We do a little bit of everything. We do stuff from some current things, a little country, we've got things from '70s, '80s, '90s, a little bit of something for everybody. We play what we like pretty much,” Wendy said of the group's selections.

The band's press release said that, although they will play to the audience, their true passion is “refusing to let the magic of the ‘hair band era' die.”

Set lists include '80s-era favorites like “Hold on Loosely,” “Bad Case of Lovin' You” and “Jenny, Jenny,” but it also reveals that the band is bending to their audience's ears with favorites like “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree,” the jazzy “Stray Cat Strut” and the raucous country favorite, “Trashy Women.”
