Re: “Don't give up on trash truck legislation,” editorial page July 29.
The editorial accurately described the serious problems created in Cayuga County and surrounding counties by hundreds of non-local long-haul garbage trucks driving to Seneca Meadows Landfill daily.
On behalf of the Upstate Safety Coalition, our community should know that we are working with local, state and federal officials to end this safety, economic and environmental threat to central New York.
We are confident that Sen. Schumer will not abandon us in our efforts to thwart this invasion of non-local (New York City) garbage trucks on our local roads and streets.
Sen. Schumer is working closely with our state representatives in seeking a solution to this problem.
The coalition is a grass roots organization comprised of numerous elected officials and concerned citizens from cities, counties, towns and villages in our area.
The issue is complicated and we are up against some very powerful economic interests who profit from the use of our roads rather than using the interstates (Route 81 and the Thruway).
The Coalition is growing and we have no intention of giving up on truck traffic legislation.
We do need help. Several times each month, The Citizen publishes the names and addresses of our state and federal officials.
I urge you to write to them and express your dissatisfaction with the huge influx of garbage trucks through our local communities.
If enough people write it will help the coalition#,s efforts when we meet with them.
