Legislation should detour trash trucks

Re: “Don't give up on trash truck legislation,” editorial page July 29.
The editorial accurately described the serious problems created in Cayuga County and surrounding counties by hundreds of non-local long-haul garbage trucks driving to Seneca Meadows Landfill daily.

On behalf of the Upstate Safety Coalition, our community should know that we are working with local, state and federal officials to end this safety, economic and environmental threat to central New York.

We are confident that Sen. Schumer will not abandon us in our efforts to thwart this invasion of non-local (New York City) garbage trucks on our local roads and streets.

Sen. Schumer is working closely with our state representatives in seeking a solution to this problem.

The coalition is a grass roots organization comprised of numerous elected officials and concerned citizens from cities, counties, towns and villages in our area.

The issue is complicated and we are up against some very powerful economic interests who profit from the use of our roads rather than using the interstates (Route 81 and the Thruway).

The Coalition is growing and we have no intention of giving up on truck traffic legislation.

We do need help. Several times each month, The Citizen publishes the names and addresses of our state and federal officials.

I urge you to write to them and express your dissatisfaction with the huge influx of garbage trucks through our local communities.

If enough people write it will help the coalition#,s efforts when we meet with them.

" Mr. Klink see you are capable of being brief and not totally name dropping! What you are not telling people is that the 'legislation' you are referring to is one of those ' in the spirit' of the law situations, not any actual changes. That this is one of those back room trade off situations that have seldom been honored or worked out in the past. You and your coalition are relying on trucking companies, polititions and the City of New York to stick with a 'you scratch my back' agreement. We all know that once they get what they want we still in the same boat because there is little honor in politics. What are you doing locally to improve safety? The Owasco Town Board had been informed of the ability to place signs in the middle of Owasco Road & 38A in the Hamlet at the playground crossings, a measure that would certainly have to slow them down. Yet, you nor the board ever acted on it. Perhaps because it wasn't your idea, or because it didn't involve rubbing elbows with the mucky-mucks? You have stated repeatedly at meetings that these trucks are not supposed to be traveling through places of historic significance. While that has never been important to you in the past, Owasco has several places of real historic significance. The historic markers are all long 38A, how about enforcing it? You have also reported that these trucks are not supposed to be traveling past playgrounds or parks, HELLO, besides our two town playgrounds we have Emerson Park also a place of historic significance. What about implementing a watershed protection district? That is something that can be done by a local law with state DOT approval? Why haven't you tried any of those options? I will take an educated guess after years of watching your act, if you do any of this it would reroute traffic to one of your buddies roadways and that would make them mad at you. Then there would be no more meetings with the important people from Skaneateles, congressman and senators, how would you be able to name drop then? Then how could you look more important than you really are? There is plenty you could have done right here in THIS town and still been on your precious task force, you have proven what your priorities are. I have attended some of those coalition meetings and listened to police agencies, lawmakers and lawyers emphatically tell the coalition that there is NOTHING that can be done because there are no laws forbidding their use of state highways. Those same people also said that the trucking lobbies are very formidable and that it was very unlikely that the laws would be changed because of their 'pull' with lawmakers. It's been years without a single step in the right direction out of the coalition, how about you try and implement some steps right here in the town you were elected to represent, you would get farther.
