Blue Lights reunite one more time

As dancers wore out the night to the groove of a reunited Auburn party band last year, Dr. Joseph Karpinski asked the Emerson Park revelers to come back this year for another Blue Lights night.
So this Friday, put on your dancing shoes.

The Blue Lights endured with rotating members from the early 1960s to the late 1990s.

Band members reunited after 13 years for a reunion July 2006, and Karpinski sponsored an encore reunion later last summer.

Karpinski is sponsoring the third in the Blue Lights reunion series at Emerson Park. An estimated 3,000 came to the first reunion and 3,500 to the second.

When people ask Karpinski why he has sponsored the Blue Lights reunions, he tells them: “It's simple: I love making people happy.”

The fondest memories he has are memories of doing things for others.

“God has been good to me, and the community has been very, very good to me and my brothers, my family and my mother and dad,” Karpinski said.

Sam Giangreco is the lead singer; John Bertonica will be drumming; Mickey Savino will be on bass; Bob Spadafora is on lead guitar; and Ron Garropy is the keyboardist.

Their classic rock sets will include Neil Diamond favorites and “Celebrate” by Kool and the Gang.

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as straight-up summer eats, will be served.

Karpinski has “been very, very generous,” Giangreco said. “It's because of him this is happening again. We're getting on in years. It's a little tougher to get us together. He's been great. He's been behind the whole thing.”

The band has been practicing this past week to get the rust out and to get a few new tunes in their repertoire, Giangreco said.

He is happy to be part of a free community event that gets people out to dance and to socialize.

“Unfortunately, people are stuck to computers these days and don't get out and see anybody,” Giangreco said. “People from all age groups came together (last year). It was nice to see everybody come out and listen to some music and dance.”
