Auburn failed to extend its Pinckney Division lead over second-place State College.
The Doubledays dropped the series finale, 3-2 on Sunday despite impressive pitching performances from Luis Perez and Nate Melek.
Perez threw five scoreless innings before losing some steam in the sixth. A Matt Cavagnaro two-run double and a Marcus Davis RBI single in back-to-back at-bats was all the Spikes needed offensively.
After surrendering the three runs, Melek relieved Perez and held to one hit in 2 1-3 innings. He finished with three strikeouts.
Trailing 3-1, Auburn started to mount a rally in the eight inning.
With J.P. Arencibia standing on second base and Victor Sanchez on first, Doubledays manager Dennis Holmberg went to his bench.
Pinch-hitter Baron Frost delivered a line-drive single to right, scoring Arencibia, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate as Sanchez attempted to score all the way from first.
Darin Mastroianni and Luis Sanchez had two hits apiece for the Doubledays. Ben Zeskind doubled and Kelly Sweppenhiser added an RBI ground-out.
Auburn completes the six-game road trip 3-3 but remains 2.5 game ahead of State College in the standings.
