When the checkers flew Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway it was Jeff Vandusen taking advantage of early leader Chuck Hebing's misfortune to pick up the 25-lap victory in the ASCS Patriot Springs.

Auburn native Bryan Howland, No. 51, runs the low side to a seventh-place finish in the Patriot Sprint Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport.
At the start of the ASCS Sprint feature, pole-sitter Tim Kelley and Chuck Hebing came down for starter Dave Farney's green flag. Before they even reached the starter's stand, Kelley and Hebing made contact sending Kelley into a 360-spin breaking his front end and ending his night.
On the restart Hebing immediately grabbed the lead and began to open a big lead pulling away from the field.
As the laps began to click off, Hebing was catching the back of the field and putting cars a lap down. Before the halfway point Hebing who was riding the top side of the speedway was attempting to put more cars down a lap going into turn one.
Hebing had to make a sudden move to avoid cars ahead of him and bounced his car off of the wall. The contact flattened his right rear sending him to the pits.
The ASCS Patriot points leader was able to return but was never a factor the rest of the night.
On the restart, VanDusen found himself in the lead and like Hebing, he took off and opened a huge lead over Rick Wilson. Over the remaining laps VanDusen drove a flawless race through lapped traffic to pick up the win.
Rick Wilson tried to use the lapped traffic to reel in VanDusen but to no avail as Wilson settled for the runner-up spot. Jared Zimbardi, Scott Kreutter and Savannah's Blake Breen were third through fifth.
“The track really came around, it was much better than in the heats,” said VanDusen after his win. “My main concern was getting through lapped traffic cleanly, not knowing who is running behind you or how close they are.”
Auburn's Bryan Howland's flight from North Carolina didn't land at the Syracuse airport till 6 p.m. Sunday night. After a quick drive to the speedway, Bryan arrived already in his driver's suit in time to make his qualifying heat. Howland had to run the B-Main but qualified for the 25-lap A-main.
Starting deep in the feature Howland was able to work his way through tough competition and finish in the seventh position.
Mike Kiser all but had the Central New York Mini Sprint feature win in his sight. As they say, “It's not over till it's over.”
With a handful of laps left, smoke began to show out of the No. 99 as he exited turns three and four. When he came down the front straightaway Kiser's car suddenly slowed with no place to go and point leader Bubba Broderick made contact with the Kiser machine. That put Cayuga County Fair Speedway multi-time winner Don Harvey in the lead.
From there Harvey cruised the rest of the laps picking up the win. With his victory, Harvey took back the season-long point battle from Broderick.
In the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified 20-lap feature point leader Shawn Donath was able to drive around early leader John Juhl II, and looked to add another win and lengthen his point lead. A yellow on lap-17 bunched up the field for a nine lap shootout.
Jeremy Pitcher who sat third on the restart moved into second place and took off after Donath.
Using the top of the speedway Pitcher was able to blast around Donath on lap-19 and from there never looked back.
Shawn Donath, Jeff Isabell, Jr., Alan Fink and Mike Mahaney rounded out the top five.
“This track is fantastic every single week, you can race high or low, we are lucky to have a place like this to race on every week,” said Pitcher after his win. “This car just has so much forward bite coming off the corners. If you can keep your momentum up going through three and four you're going to be tough to beat.”
In other action Sunday night, Phil Marsden won the UMP Street Stock feature and Tim Devendorf crossed the finish line first in the ESDCA Mod Lites.
