“However we might disagree with President Bush - he is a president who stands firmly in support of human life.”
These incredible, unbelievable words begin Judy Ducayne's latest column; written, apparently, oblivious to the brobdingnagian irony contained in such a deluded statement.
Let's look at the facts:
In his four years as governor of Texas, Bush executed 131 people on death row, with shockingly cold-blooded callousness.
Bush defended his record thusly:
“We've adequately answered innocent or guilt” he boasted, adding that all defendants “had full access to a fair trial.”
Yet in a third of these cases, the accused were represented by lawyers who were subsequently disbarred or sanctioned. In 29 cases, psychiatrists testified without having examined the defendant - a professionally unethical act. Lawyers have been found to be drunk, on cocaine, or even asleep.
Since 1976, for every seven executions, one other death row inmate has been proven innocent.
Bush took as little as 15 minutes to review final pleas in a state notorious for its sloppy, incompetent prosecutions. Man, that's real caring!
Forget the fine young Americans dying daily, or the estimated 128,000-plus innocent Iraqi civilians killed in Bush's war-for-profit. Overlook the thousand dying every day from diseases that might've been cured but for Bush's partisan vetoes. Forget those mothers and newborns dying in third-world countries for want of aid monies denied to family planning clinics who've refused to stoop to the dangerous fantasy of teaching “abstinence” to tribal peoples.
Ducayne's manic obsession with her own unique interpretation of “life” utterly blinds her to this reality. Like the pagan priests sacrificing other humans in exchange for favor from their gods, Bush has sacrificed thousands of lives on the altar of partisan pandering for the Conservative vote. And Ducayne plays the cheerleader.
How dare she lecture us on “the cheapening of human life!”
