This is no ordinary parade. Sure, there's cheering. Sure, there's applause.
But in this parade, there is also the potential to get wet, or at least to receive a little spritz.
The boat parade and fly-by, easily one of the most anticipated events during the 29th annual Antique and Classic Boat Show, kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday, on Skaneateles Lake. The boats will zoom up the west coast and then come back down the east after their specifics (owner, year, model) are announced.
The best locations to watch are along the pier or the seawall of Clift Park, said Sue Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce, which helps organize the show in partnership with the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique Boat Society and the Skaneateles Merchants Association.
The show is sponsored by Partners Trust Bank, with the Sherwood Inn and Time Warner Cable as contributing sponsors.
The three-day show, which takes place from Friday to Sunday, includes a variety of activities, including several new offerings.
For the first time, each of the boats will receive a warm welcome from Sea Scout Philip Gauthier, who will blow his bosun's whistle to announce the arrival of each exhibiting boat.
This year's show includes more than 80 boats, with half in the water and half on land, a virtual outdoors museum of restored beauties.
In the past, boats have come from both near and far, with vessels hailing from Michigan to Tennessee, South Carolina to Canada. The event usually draws around 10,000 to 12,000 people, Dove estimated.
In addition to the boat parade and other favorites - from the People's Choice Ballot for their favorite boat to live music - this year's show includes a first-time visit from the MG Car Club of Central New York, which will have a dozen cars parked in and around Clift Park.
The Syracuse Model Boat Club returns while the Skaneateles Historical Society continues to offer historic village tours in the Laker Limo.
