Darin Mastroianni broke a seventh-inning scoreless tie with an RBI single and the Auburn Doubledays offense broke out late in a 6-1 victory over the State College Spikes on Saturday.
Doubledays starter Wilfreddy Aguirre pitched well enough to pick up his first win, tossing five scoreless innings, but the offense didn't comply. Reliever Cody Crowell earned the win, allowing one run in two innings of work while Edgar Estanga picked up the save after working scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Auburn managed just two hits through six innings but erupted for 10 hits in the final three. Adam Calderone doubled twice, Baron Frost went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Mastroianni had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Doubledays offense.
C.J. Ebarb also stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-4.
The Spikes had just one extra-base hit against the Doubledays' staff. Marcus Davis led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple off Crowell. After a Robert Spain single gave State College its only run of the game, Estanga came in to relieve Crowell and shut down the Spikes.
Estanga immediately got Erik Huber to ground into a double play, then struck out three of the remaining four batters he faced.
With the win, Auburn extends its Pinckney Division lead to 3.5 over State College.
The Doubledays (22-16) and the Spikes (18-19) meet again today at 6 p.m. for the finale of the three-game series.
