WEEDSPORT #- The ever increasing population of stray cats and dogs that the SPCA faces on a regular basis is a problem that the organization is trying to curtail by encouraging people to have their pets spayed or neutered.
“Overpopulation is a major issue,” Carol Russell, executive director of the SPCA, said. “Getting pets spayed or neutered is a message we are still trying to get across and something we are still trying to deal with with the facility and the funds that we have.”
This inspired Russell five years ago to create what was then called Bikers For Paws and Claws, a fundraiser that gets motorcycle enthusiasts out for a long ride to raise money for the SPCA.
“I saw the idea on another shelter site,” Russell said. “So I thought maybe we could use that same kind of idea here. There area a lot of motorcycles around here, so I thought this would be perfect.”
The funds raised go directly toward helping to keep the cost of spaying and neutering low for lower income pet owners.
Since the very beginning, the ride and fundraiser have drawn a dedicated group of riders.
