The Skaneateles Lake Milfoil Eradication Corp., a nonprofit looking to rid the lake of a non-native species that have taken hold in recent years, has received a $100,000 pledge from an anonymous donor.
The pledge is a challenge grant, meaning the corporation must raise that same amount from other individual donors to receive the funds, according to a release sent out by SLMEC this week.
Excluding the grant, the group has raised about $200,000 of the necessary $850,000 it needs for its three-year endeavor to remove the invasive Eurasian watermilfoil from Skaneateles Lake.
In the release, Larry Rothenberg, co-founder of SLMEC, expressed his delight with the news.
“This is an incredible opportunity,” Rothenberg said. “These funds will support a significant portion of our budget for labor and equipment. And just as important, the matching grant will encourage others to make contributions.”
