Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight James O'Connor with Lupo's Hot Dog Hut.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. Chicken barbecue, because I love the taste of summer, basically.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. Don't cook much.
Q. What do you like most about the Finger Lakes?
A. It's a good area, and there are good communities that are still decent around this area.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant or bar, describe the bar or restaurant and what type of food you would serve.
A. Definitely some kind of bar and grill, but nothing too extravagant. It'd serve shrimp, steak, crab and lobster, that sort of food.
Q. Where would it be located?
A. I'd have to say somewhere around Auburn, because I'm from here. Any time you can bring jobs to your community, it's definitely a good thing.
Q. On the day of your restaurant/bar's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first three guests, who would they be?
A. Tony Lupo, the guy who owns this. We work together on this the best we can. Also, my grandparents would be the other two. I lived with them a lot as a child, and they did more than their fair share to raise me.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. Last year, the register tape ran out and no one knew how to replace it. There were people piling in and we were trying to figure out how to make change.
Q. What is your favorite junk food?
A. Milk shakes.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. A good atmosphere, good relationships with customers and good presentation of the food.
Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?
A. I'd be doing something restaurant-related anyway, like a bartender or a bar manager.
Q. Ughh. What's the one food which you absolutely can't stomach? Why?
A. Broccoli. I don't like the way it smells, the taste or the consistency.
