Awards given to local bowlers

Auburn Youth Bowling recently held its 24th annual Scholarship & High Awards dinner at the Sunset Restaurant.
Scholarships were awarded to five local youth bowlers. Matt Plis and Chris Fleming were awarded $1,250 scholarships in memory of Vi Stoddard. Two $750 scholarships in memory of Tom Aubin were presented to Todd Brechue and Gavin Dennis and one Joan A. Petrocci scholarship of $500 was given to Catie Smith.

In its 24 years, Auburn Youth Bowling has awarded 105 recipients for a total of $75,750.

Plis, 17, is the son of Karen and Jim Plis of Auburn. He is graduated from Auburn High School and is ranked 65th in his class with a cumulative average of 87.8. He will attend college and major in biology and pre-medicine.

Plis has been a member of Auburn Youth Bowling since he was eight at Polish Falcons Lanes. He was a team captain for six years and carried a 176 average in his final season.

Fleming, 17, is the son of Kevin and Joanne Fleming of Union Springs. He is graduating from Union Springs Central School 20th in his class with a cumulative average of 85.1. He will be attending Cayuga Community College and major in business.

He has been an Auburn Youth Bowling member for 11 years at Starlite Lanes and averaged a 200 this season.

Plis is the current Byrn's Junior Masters champion, having won two years in a row. He has two 300 games to his credit and a 299 game along with many 700 series.

Brechue, 18, is the son of Ed and Betty Brechue of Auburn. He is graduating from Auburn High School 136th in his class with a cumulative average of 81.4.

He will attend Cayuga Community College and major in criminal science.

Brechue has been an Auburn Youth Bowling member for 13 years at Starlite Lanes, averaging a 167 this season. He received awards for several 600 series, high average and most improved average.

Dennis, 18, is the son of Cynthia Dennis of Weedsport. He is graduating from Weedsport 77th in his class with a cumulative average of 76.2. Dennis will attend Cayuga Community College and major in math and science.

Dennis has been an Auburn Youth Bowling member for six years at Rainbow Lanes. He averaged a 201 this season which was the high average for the association. He is a three-time qualifier for the Byrn's Jr. Masters, finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

During the tournament this year, Dennis rolled a 745, his highest series ever. He has also served as team captain for two years.

Smith, 17, is the daughter of Ralph and Jennifer Smith of Union Springs and is graduating from Union Springs with a cumulative average of 83.9. She will attend Cayuga Community College and major in business administration.

Smith has been an Auburn Youth Bowling member for seven years at Starlite Lanes and averaged a 124 this past season.

She placed third in her league and received awards for high game and high series.

Along with scholarships, awards were given to Briana Gomez for high average (164), Gavin Dennis for boys high average (201), high game of 254 and series of 614 to Julie Janusz, high game of 279 to Chris Fleming and high series of 756 to Chris Gomez.
