Hits & Misses

HIT: To the annual Bon Ton Roulet, a bicycling tour of the Finger Lakes that brings hundreds of people to the region every year.
The sight of tents and bicyclists filling the lawn at Emerson Park on Sunday afternoon for the first night of the tour offered plenty of proof how successful this event has become. The bikers will be riding throughout the region over the next week and taking in local attractions along the way.

The Bon Ton Roulet is a great example of how creative thinking and regional cooperation can be combined to give the local tourism industry a nice boost.

MISS: To the continued growth in whooping cough cases confirmed this year in Cayuga County.

Last week county officials said the number of confirmed cases has reached 20, way above the normal levels for a given year. We urge the public to be careful - do the things you're supposed to do to fend off contagious diseases and seek medical attention quickly if you're feeling symptomatic. We also urge the county health department to continue keeping the public apprised of the situation. (Readers should be sure to check out the column on the front page of today's Lake Life section by Elane Daly, county director of health and human services.)

HIT: To Steven Komanecky, who last weekend won an award at the All American Soap Box Derby as the top local race director nationally.

Komanecky has been the driving force behind the Soap Box Derby's revival in Auburn, so this is truly a deserving honor.

It's also an award that is a great reflection on the all the volunteers and participants who have made the Auburn derby, held each spring, such a successful local event.

HIT: To Skaneateles native Tom Scherrer, who captured his first Nationwide Tour victory in several years this past weekend.

Scherrer dominated the field at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Missouri.

The win is a big step toward his goal of playing again on the prestigious PGA Tour.
