However much we might disagree with President Bush on a wide variety of issues, one thing remains clear: he is a president who stands firmly in support of the sanctity of human life.
Both houses of Congress recently passed legislation which extends government funding of embryonic stem cell research and limits its restrictions. Bush vetoed the bill, making it clear that he would continue to do so for the remainder of his administration. Embryonic stem cell research is when a pre-born baby is killed and used for experiments, all in the name of medical progress.
This truth is often too harsh on our sensitive little American ears so we change the language to make it sound more, well, comfortable. “Baby” we change to “embryo,” “murder” becomes “medical procedure,” “mutilating experiments” is changed to “research.”
Keep in mind that all the medical breakthroughs in stem cell research have involved adult stem cells. As the president stated, this does not involve the creation, harm, or destruction of human life. But the obvious question is: If there has never been a single instance of anyone ever being helped in any way by embryonic stem cell research, why this mad rush by so many to do it?
Raising children involves concepts that are hateful in today's culture. Responsibility, sacrifice, putting others above oneself. These are utterly incompatible with today's gods of pleasure, distraction, entertainment and self-indulgence. In other words, if we can kill the babies then nothing else really matters; so anything goes. We can live any way we wish, no restrictions, no boundaries, no morals.
And the cheapening of human life is a gift we've handed down to our youngsters. A generation ago if two boys had a disagreement they might end up in a minor tussle. Today if somebody violates some warped idea of “respect” somebody ends up dead.
Human life means nothing. We throw it away like a piece of trash. This is the fruit of a culture of death. We need to go full steam ahead on adult stem cell research to help those who suffer so terribly from crippling diseases. But never should we sacrifice our children on the altar of selfishness. A recent movie tells of the ancient Mayan culture which sacrificed massive numbers of men, women and children to their pagan gods. Human life was cheap and the blood flowed from their high places of worship. Is 21st century America very much different?
