Auburn Plaza will pick up another tenant this August with the arrival of Sherwin Williams.
The paint retailer plans to make the move from 283 Genesee St. near Columbus Street to the Grant Avenue plaza by Aug. 13, district manager Dan Shannon said this week.
“We've been in Auburn a while and we're going to stay there,” Shannon said, indicating the lease for the space just off of Grant Avenue suggests a fresh 25-year commitment.
The recently renovated former On Cue store also will offer greater exposure to vehicle and foot traffic.
The plaza in the heart of the city's commercial corridor is home to anchors Bed Bath & Beyond, Marshall's and the A.C. Moore arts and crafts franchise scheduled to open Sept. 9 as well as several smaller retailers.
“Right now we're about 70 percent wholesale and 30 percent retail,” Shannon said. “This will hopefully give us an opportunity to do a little more on the retail side.”
The Sherwin Williams deal brings the plaza to full occupancy, according to owner Michael Wachs.
“To see the investment in this place ... I think the plaza's picking up business and they plan to keep on building,” he said.
A grand reopening featuring sales and specials is planned for September. Back on Genesee Street, the former Sherwin Williams store is pegged to be part of city's second Walgreens pharmacy.
Point Five Developers Auburn has submitted a proposal to build another 14,000-square-foot Walgreens at 283-301 Genesee St. A company official was not available to comment on the time frame for that location Friday.
Walgreens opened its first store at 150 Grant Ave. last year.
