Victor Mason of the town of Sennett reported to the sheriff's office this afternoon that a bay team of horses had either strayed away from his pasture lot or the pair had been stolen Thursday night.

With its national championship solar-powered car, the Sunpacer, Cato-Meridian has been on the cutting edge of energy-saving technology. Some will be surprised, then, to learn that the district is investing in two monster Chevy 350-horsepower engines, which harken to the gas-happy days of the 1960s. The engines are part of a cogeneration project that will put the district in the electricity business.

Cayuga County District Attorney James Vargason will be sworn in tonight as president of the New York State District Attorney's Association. Vargason replaces John Tunney, Steuben County's district attorney. The swearing-in ceremony is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown.
