Summer reading theme a mystery

Tuesday, July 10, definitely was an unusual day at Seymour Library.
We arrived that morning to find a trail of unexplained footprints leading from the parking lot to the front of the building. Soon, a crowd began to gather. Detectives wearing hats and badges appeared. We'd have been worried, except we knew what was behind all the mysterious goings-on.

It was the day of our annual summer reading kick-off party, and our summer program features a mystery theme this year: “Get a Clue @ Your Library.”

The footprints led to the front lawn, where children gathered to make “Library Detective” visors and badges, play golf and sidewalk tic-tac-toe and watch a magic show by Aaron Isaacs. They picked up reading logs, too - and if they fill them out and bring them back at the end of the summer, they're eligible to win a prize.

There's no required number of books to read - we just want children to read!

If you couldn't make it to the party, don't worry. We still have lots of reading logs left, and we can even come up with a Library Detective badge if your child needs one.

We still have lots of events planned, too. In fact, there are activities every week now through the middle of August. Here's what we have going on:

€ Storytime on the Lawn at 11 a.m. every Tuesday through Aug. 14.

Our weekly summer storytimes always draw lots of preschoolers and younger elementary school students. You don't need to register. If it rains, we move indoors.

€ Crafts every Wednesday through Aug. 15. Call the Children's Room at 252-2571 for details on the time and the project and to register.

Most of our crafts are designed for children kindergarten age and up, who can work independently.

€ A free concert by Tom Knight, whose original songs and puppets always draw a big crowd.

The concert is at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, and it's across the street from the library, in the community room at SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church.

€ Chess Club at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13. Our chess club meets monthly throughout the year, with expert instruction by chess master Tom McKellop. Beginners are welcome.

Call the Children's Room to register.

€ Our “Get a Clue” theme gives us the chance to talk about some of our favorite mysteries for children: “The American Girl History Mysteries,” “Nate the Great” books, the “Boxcar Children” adventures. Donald Sobol invites children to match wits with his young detective, Encyclopedia Brown.

Wendelin Van Draanen's Sammy Keyes books are for every reader who wishes Nancy Drew wasn't quite so perfect - Sammy is good at solving mysteries, but she's also pretty good at getting in trouble.

And speaking of Nancy Drew - if you visit our Web site at www.seymourlibrary.org, you can find out about all of our activities and get a special message about summer reading from everybody's favorite teenage sleuth.

Sheila B. Anderson is director of Seymour Library in Auburn.
