Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for passage of a bill he says will protect 160,000 upstate New York children from losing health care coverage and add thousands more people to the Children's Health Insurance Program.
The program is set to expire Sept. 30, and Schumer said Wednesday that if the Senate Finance Committee fails to pass a reauthorizaton of the plan, that thousands will be left without health insurance.
Children's Health Insurance Program is jointly financed by the federal and state governments, and is administered at the state level.
Broad federal guidelines allow each state to determine the specifics of its program, including eligibility, benefit packages, payment levels and administrative procedures.
“It is absolutely unacceptable for the federal government to stand idle while 160,000 New York children could become uninsured,” Schumer said in a news release.
“Extending this program allows parents to sleep better at night knowing that their children will be covered.”
Statistics provided by Schumer's staff indicate that 20,973 in the Rochester-Finger Lakes Region are enrolled in Child Health Plus and that 20,894 children in the region are completely without health insurance.
