Niles town meetings to focus on lake
The next two public meetings for the town of Niles comprehensive plan have been scheduled, and will focus on lake issues such as water quality, recreation, lakeshore development and public access.
The next meeting will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Niles Town Hall on New Hope Road, followed by a meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the West Niles Fire Department on Valentine Road.
All permanent and seasonal residents, business owners, landowners and concerned citizens are invited to attend.
Virus confirmed in more types of fish
Viral hemorrhagic septicemia, a fish-killing disease, has been confirmed in another species in Skaneateles Lake.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation learned late last week that VHS was found in a lake trout, Dan Bishop, a regional fisheries manager for the DEC, wrote in an e-mail.
Prior to the lake trout, the virus had only been confirmed in the rock and smallmouth bass of Skaneateles Lake.
Bishop said that VHS was also found in a Skamania steelhead (rainbow trout) from the Little Salmon River, a tributary to Lake Ontario in Mexico, and a carp from Lake Erie's Dunkirk Harbor.
“These are the first findings of it in trout or salmon in N.Y.,” Bishop wrote. “Hopefully trout and salmon are not nearly as susceptible to it and we won't witness any large scale die-offs.”
VHS has also been found in a sunfish and koi mortality event in a small pond in Ransomville, located in western New York, and in a sunfish in the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, Bishop wrote.
CCC grad receives sheriff's scholarship
A Cayuga Community College graduate has received a $500 New York State Sheriffs' Association scholarship.
Michael Szczepanski, of Auburn, graduated in May. He was one of 32 community college students awarded the scholarship.
Recipients were chosen based on academic performance and a commitment to work in criminal justice. Szczepanski plans a career in law enforcement and is enrolled in a bachelor's program at State University of New York at Albany.
