There is no missing the funk when Missy Ragonese, John Weber and Paul Carpenter, better known together as The Miss E Band, take the stage.
“I think I'm somewhere a cross between R&B and the blues with a little funk thrown in,” Ragonese said.
When asked about being frequently compared to legend Janis Joplin, she laughed.
“I'm always flattered when people ask. Yes, I do love to sing her music. I don't personally think I sound like her, but if everyone else does, I'll continue to do it.”
The band's performances consist of about half originals and half covers. It performs a lot of classic rock, featuring tunes made famous by Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles mixed up with some newer classics by Nirvana and 4 Non-Blondes.
With Ragonese on guitar, Weber on drums and Carpenter on bass, the band is now down to a three-piece, which had to happen, according to Ragonese, because the former configuration, with horns, didn't click anymore.
Ragonese said being a three piece has made her work harder as a guitar player.
That's not too hard though, as she sports a custom-made, electric blue (in color and sound) Fender Fat Strat with lipstick pickups, one of which is a hum bucker placed in the guitar in reversed fashion, a la Hendrix.
While looking cool, the hum bucker works best to reduce noise interference and give Ragonese's blue guitar its crystal-clear funky sound. Ragonese called it a “girlie guitar,” and the sound that comes out is as rip-roaring fun as the instrument looks.
Band members may be familiar to the crowd from previous incarnations. Carpenter played with Mojo Filter and currently plays in the Horn Dogs with Weber.
Weber used to play with Rhythm Method and the Crystal Mountain Band.
Ragonese formerly played in a band called Foolish Heart, after which she played with Split Image, then the Elmo Blake Band, finally deciding to do her own thing.
The Miss E Band has been in existence since the early 1990s and is based out of Syracuse.
Ragonese will be moving out state sometime after her Auburn performance but plans to play in New York at least once a year.
