Auburn didn't light up the scoreboard, but solid pitching early helped the Doubledays split a doubleheader against the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Monday.
Auburn defeated Lowell 3-1 in Game 1, but managed just two hits and dropped Game 2, 5-1.
Brett Cecil, Marc Rzepczynski, Javier Nieves and Cody Crowell combined on a gem, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts in the seven-inning game.
The Doubledays' Game 1 offense was provided by a C.J. Ebarb home run and a Ben Zeskind homer. Rzepczynski picked up the win and Crowell earned the save.
In Game 2, Wilfreddy Aguirre again failed to earn his first win of the season. The second-year Doubleday gave up five runs in 3 2-3 innings for the loss. Adam Mills and Chad Popich completely shut down Auburn's offense for the Spinners, allowing no runs and one hit apiece. Popich earned the win.
Darin Mastroianni and Ebard had the only hits in the game for Auburn. The Doubledays only run came in the top of the seventh as Adam Calderone drove in Victor Santana with a sacrifice fly.
With the split, the Doubledays (16-11) remain two games ahead of Williamsport for first place in the Pinckney Division. After seven days on the road, Auburn returns to Falcon Park today to kick off a six-game homestand.
