Republican candidates have the early lead in the closely watched Auburn mayoral and Cayuga County district attorney races this fall, according to the latest campaign finance disclosure reports.
Filings made with the state Board of Elections show incumbent Mayor Tim Lattimore has a closing balance of $2,724 in his campaign. Lattimore is the Republican endorsed candidate for the four-year position. Lattimore's campaign spent $1,711 and raised $4,435 during the period since the last filing date, which was in January.
The endorsed Democratic candidate, former Auburn Fire Department Chief Michael Quill, reported $307 on hand. He has raised $592 and spent $285.
Financial disclosures were not on file as of Monday afternoon with the state Board of Elections for any other mayor candidates, including Democratic Auburn City Council David Dempsey, who has vowed to challenge Quill in a primary. Dempsey has received the county Independence Party
endorsement.
The deadline for July disclosure reports was Sunday.
In the race for district attorney, Republican candidate Jon Budelmann reported a closing balance of $18,526, having raised $43,418 and spent $24,892 during the filing period. Budelmann, the county's chief assistant district attorney, is seeking to replace James Vargason, who opted to seek another term.
Budelmann's challenger, Michael Bass, reported a closing balance of $4,243. He raised $7,290 and spent $3,047 during the filing period.
In the other county-wide race, incumbent Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer reported a closing balance of $6,417. No other candidates had reports on file for that race.
County political party committees also reported finances. The Cayuga County Republican Party reported a $24,538 balance, while the Cayuga County Conservative Party has $5,586 on hand. The Cayuga County Democratic Committee did not have a July report posted on the state Board of Elections campaign finance Web site.
