OSSINING - An unruly crowd of more than 500 young people clashed when revelers from a block party tried to crash a sweet 16 party in Ossining, and hundreds of officers were called in to bring the crowd under control, police said.
No one was hurt and no one was arrested during the confrontation, which started late Saturday when a block party merged with the sweet 16 party, Ossining police Sgt. John Greenan said.

Greenan said that disorderly conduct arrests would have angered the crowd even more.

“And then you'd really have a melee,” he said. “Individuals are going to get hurt. Police are going to get hurt. It's not worth it.”

Greenan said the trouble started when a fight broke out at the sweet 16 party at the Moose Lodge and the manager there kicked everyone out.

As the guests left the lodge after 11 p.m., Greenan said, people from the block party who had heard about the birthday celebration began arriving even though they hadn't been invited.

Several small fights erupted among the crowd, Greenan said.

Officers from the state police, Westchester County and New Rochelle all assisted Ossining police in controlling the disturbance.

Greenan said it took police until 3 a.m. to get everyone to calm down and go home.
