STATEN ISLAND - The Auburn Doubledays' offensive struggles continued Wednesday night as the team dropped its third straight, losing to the Staten Island Yankees 4-3. Two of the runs came in the ninth as Auburn almost pulled off the rally.
Staten Island jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third off Auburn starter Wilfreddy Aguirre (0-3). The Yankees' Justin Snyder doubled, scoring Isaiah Howes and Austin Krum. Two batters later, Damon Sublett singled, bringing home Snyder.
Staten Island added its fourth run in the sixth. Matt Morris grounded out to third, but right fielder David Williams was able to score because of a throwing error on Doubledays first baseman Manuel Rodriquez.
Yankees' right-hander Zachary McAllister (2-1) dominated Auburn in six innings, allowing only three hits while walking none and striking out 10. As a team, Auburn struck out a season-high 16 times. McAllister gave way to John Axford in the seventh.
Auburn finally got on the board in the top of the eighth, when Axford walked Darin Mastroianni with the bases loaded, bringing home Adam Calderone. But Jason Kiley struck out the next two Auburn batters, leaving the bases loaded.
Right fielder Victor Santana drove in two runs in the top of the ninth, but that was it for Auburn.
