Spend an hour during Wednesday lunch breaks until the end of August listening to the Willard Chapel Tiffany Summer Concert Series.
Celebrating its 13th year, Maureen McEvers, chapel wedding and events coordinator, has coordinated an eight-concert series held noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday, in the chapel.
The series began as a brown bag luncheon as a way to draw members of the public to the chapel.
“The whole mission of the chapel is to make this place available to the public. This event lets people enjoy the chapel and local musicians,” McEvers said. “This event fits our whole mission.”
Musician Bob Piorun and students from his music workshops held at Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center kicked off the first concert July 11 performing a variety of music from rock to jazz.
Piorun, who has performed in the series in years past, said that his 25 students are all ages and play all types of music.
“In this case, it's for my students. It's a big thing for them. This is their concert,” Piorun said. “I do it to let them experience playing a live concert.”
Of the eight performances, two new shows have been added to the series this year. Guitarist Loren Barrigar's original melodies have been played on the television series “ER” and on a Christmas compilation CD with BB King and Patty LaBelle. Barrigar will play in the series July 18.
“Loren is a very well-known guitar player and does a certain type of string fingering while playing,” McEvers said. “I'm dying to see him.”
Stephen, Barbara and Stephanie Lonski, a family group, will sing old time gospel during their concert Aug. 15.
“Lonskis are a mother, father and daughter trio. They're just a family of musicians,” McEvers said. “It's so unique to have this.”
The remaining five concerts include artists who have either performed in the concert series before or for other events at the chapel including Catherine Byrne, a pianist, Joan Haff and Lori Rhodes-Pettit, both organists, and Nicholas Hrynyk, also a pianist.
Susan May welcomes her students, Stars of Tomorrow, back to the series Aug. 22.
“This event started because we wanted to draw in local people free of charge,” said Kathy Walker, executive director of the chapel. “We get a variety of musicians every year and welcome new musicians.”
