TARRYTOWN - A construction worker on a bridge rescued a would-be suicide jumper on Tuesday as she leaned over a railing above the Hudson River, police said.
The worker, state Thruway Authority Supervisor Ernie Feeney, said he went to the scene at the Tappan Zee Bridge at about 9:30 a.m. when he heard about a “possible jumper.”
“She was on the rail, holding onto one of the beams,” Feeney said in a video posted on The Journal News' Web site. “She didn't see me coming up behind her.”
He said he “grabbed her from the side and pulled her to the ground.”
State police Sgt. Christine Revella said that after Feeney rescued the 18-year-old woman, she was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for a psychiatric evaluation.
Feeney said he tried once before to prevent a suicide on the bridge, “but I didn't save that individual. I just couldn't hold onto them.” Flashbacks to that episode “kept coming to my mind” on Tuesday, he said.
“I was only going to get one shot at her,” he said. “I was just hoping my grip was good enough to hold onto her.”
