HIT: To a successful edition of the Cayuga County Fair. The fair, which is still recovering from a one-year hiatus in 2005, did well last week even after a rainy start and finish.
The fair had a larger opening day attendance than last year, which was probably helped by free admission and parking. Anything that helps local families stretch their entertainment dollars is welcomed, especially in these days of $3+ a gallon gasoline.
The fair had a little something for everyone, especially in agricultural-related fields. Its return for 2008 is welcomed and expected.
MISS: To sadly, yet another example of why drinking and boating do not mix. On early Sunday morning, John Kelly, 32, and Heather Wilkins, 26, were killed when their boat was struck on Skaneateles Lake.
The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department charged Craig Cordes with boating while intoxicated as the driver of the boat that struck the other watercraft. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department said Cordes was part of a group that bar-hopped through Skaneateles on Saturday night.
It is hard to believe that during a time when the Skaneateles area revisited a past alcohol-related tragedy - when the driver in a fatal crash was released from state prison - that this could happen. We offer condolences to the families of those whose lives were lost and hope that justice will be served to those responsible.
HIT: To AuroraFest, which is still going strong almost 30 years after its beginning as a way for families to relax during the summer.
Now the youngsters who enjoyed the first AuroraFests are bringing their own children. Let the tradition continue for many years to come.
MISS: To the end of the Auburn Doubledays' recent seven-game winning streak. Yes, it was going to end eventually but it's always sad for baseball fans to see the home nine lose.
Even after the loss to Aberdeen on Sunday, Auburn still owns first place in the Pinckney Division.
And who knows, the best may be yet to come.
