Richie: ‘She's just in an unfortunate situation'
Lionel Richie didn't skirt questions about his daughter's drunken-driving case after his performance at the Essence Music Festival.

“She's just in an unfortunate situation,” he said Saturday night.

Nicole Richie, 25, is scheduled to go on trial Wednesday. She was arrested Dec. 11 and pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. In addition, her case contains an allegation that she had a prior misdemeanor DUI conviction in June 2003.

“She keeps apologizing to me,” Lionel Richie said. “I told her, ‘You're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing to your father at this age.”'

The R&B star said celebrities today are under more scrutiny than ever before.

“There's just so much information out there right now - MySpace, cell phones, the Internet,” he said. “If we had had all that when The Commodores were around, God only knows what my mother and father would have seen.”

To be determined is whether Nicole Richie will spend time in jail like her friend Paris Hilton, who served about 23 days behind bars for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Aiken involved in spat with woman on airplane

Clay Aiken was involved in an airplane disturbance with another passenger Saturday while en route to Tulsa International Airport, a newspaper reported.

The dispute on a Continental Airlines flight took place between Aiken, who was traveling Saturday morning to a performance at the Brady Theater, and a woman, the Tulsa World reported for Sunday's editions.

Concertgoers who attended the ormer “American Idol” singer's show said afterward that Aiken joked on-stage about being beaten up by a girl earlier in the day.

FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson said there was a dispute between a male passenger and a woman on the flight but could not confirm the passenger was Aiken. He said the dispute was over the male passenger's foot resting on the woman's armrest. He said there was an allegation the woman gave the male passenger a “minor shove” during the argument.

Tulsa Airport Authority spokeswoman Alexis Higgins said the passengers were held until FBI agents arrived to interview them. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

Prince returns for concerts in hometown

Prince thrilled his hometown fans with three shows over 12 hours, only stopping when police shut him down.

The Minneapolis native first performed Saturday at a department store to promote his new cologne, cramming nine songs into a 45-minute set. He then played that night at the Target Center arena. He capped the night with a return to First Avenue, the club he made famous in the movie “Purple Rain.”
