After a bumpy start, the Veterans Memorial Park Committee has completed the park project's first phase and it's ready to kick off the second.
Two veterans groups, one representing Vietnam War veterans and the other, Korean War veterans, approached the city last year to develop the park into an all-inclusive memorial.
Since then, a cooperative group - the Veterans Memorial Park Committee - is overseeing the renovations of Pomeroy Park.
They split the design into stages so workers can tackle portions once the park committee receives the funding.
The group is collecting money to continue with the design's second section. The committee has promised to fund the project with no cost to the city, mostly with donations. Auburn owns the
Genesee Street property but has allowed the committee to improve it.
The amount of time it takes to complete the memorial park will depend on when they can obtain funding.
The second stage consists of leveling the Genesee Street lot and placing a circular area that will contain a flag pole and five memorial stones each with an emblem signifying the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard or the Air Force.
Certain items will bear donors' names, either in the form of engravings on stones or benches, or plaques.
The city is providing labor and equipment, but offers no fiscal support.
During the first phase, workers removed concrete and the steps leading to the park and replaced them with a wheelchair-accessible ramp.
The design includes a straight walkway and benches at the 172 Genesee St. space next door to the Cayuga County Office Building. The white marble cross, a World War I monument, will remain where it is, officials promise.
