County legislature votes to keep health benefits

AUBURN -- The county legislator who originally proposed the idea of cutting legislator health benefits, voted against his own idea Monday night, requesting additional information.
Legislator David Pappert, R-Auburn, recently sought legislative support to cut medical, hospital, surgical and dental insurance coverage to newly elected and appointed Cayuga County Legislators as of Sept. 1 as a way to save taxpayers roughly $200,000 annually.

Legislators defeated 5-1, a bill to cut the benefits during the Government Operations Committee Monday night.

In his original letter to legislators, Pappert wrote that the cost of providing benefits is greater than the total of all legislative salaries and stipends given to the chairman, majority/minority leader and the committee chairs combined.

Following much debate about the bill, only Dan Schuster, D-Auburn, voted to cut the benefits. Schuster currently doesn't accept the insurance coverage the county offers.

Several legislators disagreed on the idea that current legislators will be allowed to keep their benefits but that new members won't have it at all.

"Personally I think it should be one way or the other," said Fran Mitchell, Government Operations chairman.

" Remember that except for Schuster, every other legislator should be voted out. It is this lack of concern for the tax paying public that has caused our taxes to be as high as they are.Pappert is the first one who should be replaced. Talk about a waffler. He's the one who was quoted as saying how exorbitant the cost was to the taxpayer. But when it came right down to helping the taxpayer, the good old boy complex took over and he voted to take care of a few instead of the majority. Dave is a spend, spend, spend liberal hiding under a fiscal responsible label. Not one of these part time people should have these benefits. There is not one employer in the private sector that offers this type of benefit to its' employees. The 5 Legislators ( which the Citizen did not identify- great coverage as usual)should be ashamed of themselves! "

" I agree with Dan W. Also what private sector job can you work at (part time), retire AND still keep all your medical benefits for the rest of your life for FREE??? NONE that I know of. Kick the old legislators off the County benefit roster once they no longer serve as a legislator! How much would THAT save? "

" Why the benefits for a part time job? When you have to pay for most or part of in the private sector. With a full time job, more pork and sticking the taxpayers "
