Giving up the news beat for the summer heat
No longer breaking stories in high heels and skimpy outfits, Lauren Jones has signed off from the KYTX-TV “Eye of East Texas” news team and returned to modeling swimsuits.
Rival stations in Tyler weren't entertained by the monthlong ratings stunt by Jones, the star behind the upcoming Fox reality show “Anchorwoman” and a former hostess for World Wrestling Entertainment.
She spent June traipsing around the east Texas city in tight tops and a miniskirt, hunting down scoops for the CBS affiliate.
Her on-air reports, which included toeing through penguin droppings at the zoo in stiletto heels, are intended to get laughs when “Anchorwoman” premieres Aug. 21.
“She definitely wasn't your typical, Day 1, trying-to-break-into-the-business newsperson,” said Bryan Houston, a KYTX anchor who worked alongside the 24-year-old former New York beauty pageant contestant.
Not everyone was smiling. Residents of the rural area about 100 miles east of Dallas worry that “Anchorwoman” will portray their city as backwoods.
Watros disregards adage for film ‘Avenging Angels'
In her new movie, Cynthia Watros ignored the old Hollywood adage about not working with children and animals because they steal the scene.
The 38-year-old former “Lost” actress plays a barmaid and former prostitute carving out a hardscrabble life for herself and her young daughter in “Avenging Angel,” airing Saturday on the Hallmark Channel.
“Superstition be damned,” Watros said about her co-stars. “I've got horses and chickens and children on set. I've got explosions, bar fights, town riots and buildings burning down. And I love every moment of it!”
The cable movie is Watros' first Western.
Village People policeman to ride again on tour
Victor Willis, the original policeman in the disco band The Village People, is planning his first performance in about 25 years after completing a drug treatment program earlier this year, his publicist said.
Willis, 55, will appear at the House of Blues in Las Vegas on Aug. 31 in a show previewing his planned 2008 world tour, publicist Alice Wolf said Friday.
His “Victor Willis Disco Dance Tour” is to begin in March and is expected to include concerts in the U.S., Australia, Britain, Japan, Norway, Germany and Canada, Wolf said.
“He'll come out on his motorcycle” as the cop and perform Village People hits and his solo work, she said.
