When the bus from New York City finally pulled into the parking lot of King Ferry's First Presbyterian Church, eight local families were anxiously waiting. Parents, children and dogs milled around in the aftermath of a warm summer rain as eight inner-city children, ages 6 to 12, walked off the bus and into another world. The children and their host families are participating in a 121-year-old program, the Fresh Air Fund, which takes children from New York City's toughest neighborhoods and places them with rural families across eastern America. Ten thousand children will spend between two and six weeks in the countryside.

Billy Philbott, 18, took a greasy rag out of his back pocket and started wiping down one of the unassembled rides at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds. His father, Bill, looked on from below. The father-and-son team is getting to spend a lot of time together this summer learning what it takes to be a carny for the Auburn-based Sofo Amusements.

They're a part of the 15-member crew who started Sunday to assemble the fair's midway rides. They'll also operate one of the rides or games during the 22nd edition of the fair.
Arriving at the fairgrounds about 10 a.m., Bill Philbott, 40, and his son were assigned to assemble the Hurricane, a ride that consists of six carts revolving around a giant tower as they jerk up and down. It would take less than two hours to get it ready for the fair's opening Tuesday.
"I want to ride on this thing this week. It looks like it goes pretty fast," the younger Philbott quipped, while trying to get the grime off a cart.
