Hits & Misses

HIT: To the area enjoying a safe Fourth of July Holiday. Yes, the weather was disappointing but the fact that there were no major accidents or incidents on the highways or waterways is something to find a silver lining in.
Maybe it was because the holiday fell in the middle of the week, but it was nice to celebrate our nation's birthday in a safe manner.

MISS: OK, it's too easy a target, but we don't get significant rain for weeks and of course it rains all day on the Fourth of July. Sometimes, Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor.

On the other hand, farmers (and homeowners with brown lawns) really needed to have some moisture in the ground.

HIT: To the start of the annual Cayuga County Fair in Weedsport.

The fair reminds us of the good old days and that's what's great about it, that we can return to that time when we visit.

The fair attracts people of all ages, and it's still an excellent place to take the family.

The fair runs through Sunday night, and parking and admission are free.

HIT: To the opening of the new Cayuga County Sheriff's Office substation in Moravia this week.

There are two benefits coming out of this. First, county sheriff's deputies will be working in an area with New York State Police and Moravia Police officers. Any time law enforcement can be in close quarters to share information is a huge advantage.

Second, response times to areas in the southern part of the county should be improved, maybe some day saving lives.

Now the sheriff's office can look forward to opening its northern substation in Cato once its new municipal building is finished.

Residents on both ends of the county will benefit.
