Inmates can now post bail on credit cards

People who get arrested in Cayuga County but find themselves short of cash will soon be able to post bail with a credit card.
Cayuga County legislators recently authorized the county to enter into an agreement with Government Payment Services Inc., to provide services that allow the jail to receive bail payments made by credit card.

"We're one of the few counties in New York that didn't offer this before," said Cayuga County Sheriff Dave Gould.

When people are arrested, they are sometimes housed at the Cayuga County Jail awaiting the posting of bail and costing the jail roughly $75 a day.

According to the bill, a number of inmates could be bailed out earlier if permitted to post the necessary bail through a credit card.

Government Payment Services will provide the service at no cost to the county and will also provide and maintain the necessary equipment.

Gould plans to have the system up and running within the next two weeks.

"It's definitely going to benefit the county because it will save them money," Gould said. "They'll get out and we won't have to support an inmate population."
