OSWEGO - A 21-year-old man was convicted Monday of murdering another man while he slept outside a bar and dumping his body in a swamp.
An Oswego County jury found Anthony Fortino guilty on two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of burglary. He was acquitted on two kidnapping charges.

Fortino, of Syracuse, was charged in the murder of Michael Smith, 28, who was killed while sleeping outside the Wander Inn in Constantia early on the morning of Aug. 17.

Fortino beat Smith to death with a hammer and then dumped his body in a swampy area.

In a statement to investigators, Fortino said he did not know why he attacked Smith, state police said at the time of his arrest. Fortino faces up to 25 years to life in state prison. His sentencing was scheduled for July 22.

Constantia is 16 miles north of Syracuse.
