The Cayuga County Fair kicks off today, at the fairgrounds in Weedsport.
Entrance and parking to the fair will be free for the second consecutive year.
There are door prizes every day. Musical performers include the Wes Earl Revue from 8 to 11 tonight; Nik and the Nice Guys 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday; Ruby Shooz 7:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday; the Custom Taylor Band 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and Sarah Horner 7 to 11 p.m. Sunday.
Dirtcar Racing will zip in the grandstand starting at 7:30 p.m. every night. Of particular note is the Broken Hearts Divorcee Demo and $5,000 purse in the demo derby. Fireworks will light the sky every night.
The fair also is hosting wine tastings for the first time. Ashley Lynn Winery, of Mexico, Catharine Valley Winery, of Burdett, King Ferry Winery and Thousand Islands Winery will pour after 5 p.m. Thursday, after 3 p.m. Friday and after 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Mostly, the event is good for families, organizers said.
“We have a lot of fun activities for families,” said Kathy Lawler, a member of the fair committee. “Children of all ages can participate in our agricultural awareness activities. It's free. It's fun.”
The agricultural awareness booth will be set up noon to 6 p.m. every day of the fair near the alpaca pen. Participating children will be given a learning experience about the different species of livestock exhibiting at the fair.
After going through the agricultural awareness activity, each child will get ice cream supplied by Byrne Dairy.
Lawler also invites parents to participate with their 6-month-old to 2-year-old cuties in a strictly fun “Lil' Baby Show” 5 p.m. today. Every participant will get a prize.
The best and the most bizarre talents are being sought for the noon Saturday talent show. Winners of the talent contest will qualify to participate in the New York State Fair's talent show. Every participant will get a prize.
More talent of the county's youth will be on display with the entries of 44 4-H Club participants in the “human ecology” section. On the animal science side, a total of three 4-Hers are entering their poultry in the 1 p.m. show being held today; seven are entering their sheep in the 2 p.m. Saturday show; four are entering their goats in the 1 p.m. Sunday show; six are entering their dogs in the 2 p.m. Friday show; 14 are entering their rabbits in the 11 a.m. Friday show; and 15 are entering their horses in the all-day show that started at 9 a.m. today.
A total of 10 kids will vie for the best pet in the most diverse competition of the fair at 4 p.m. Friday. Dogs, cats, snakes, gerbils, hedge hogs and fish will all be considered as the best pet.
Any horse-crazy kid, whether he or she is in 4-H, can enter their model horses into a youth model horse show at 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants should call ahead at the Cornell Cooperative Extension at 255-1183 so organizers can set up enough tables for all the participants.
The number of 4-H kids are down but “it's a fun time for anyone who's interested,” said Linda Lunkenheimer, the 4-H Youth Development Program Assistant.
