New York exhibit unveiled

AUBURN - Because of its excellent arts education and both financial and moral support, New York has one of the largest populations of professional visual artists in the nation.
And it seemed as though everyone of them converged on the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn Sunday afternoon.

The center was the site of the grand opening of “Made in NY 2007,” this year's installment of Schweinfurth's annual exhibit featuring works by residents of the state.

The exhibit, which runs through August 25, consists of 83 paintings, sculptures and video artwork created by 69 artists from Long Island to Buffalo - and practically everywhere between.

“This is a juried show, and we received 551 submissions from 295 artists#)that's the most we've ever had,” said Stephanie Schuster, Schweinfurth's assistant director, from the center Sunday afternoon.

The jurors reviewed slides and digital images of the works before deciding which would be shown at the exhibit, she continued. “(Made in NY) is something we do every year to showcase the range of talent of New York state artists.”

On Sunday afternoon, throngs of artists and visitors meandered through Schweinfurth's main gallery examining paintings, sculptures and video creations. One of the artists present was Stephen Datz, of Skaneateles, who had two mixed media sculptures on display.

Standing side by side, “Pink and Black Siren” and “Yellow and Black Siren” were created by using flotsam and jetsam Datz found on the beach, he explained.

“I was inspired by reading Ulysses, so that's why they're called 'sirens.'” Datz said of the five-foot-high abstract works, referring to the nymphs in Greek mythology. “I used a 'vocabulary,' as I call it, to find seemingly unrelated items, and they really came together well as I (created) them.”

One siren had a small buoy as its “head,” which Datz said represents possession. “The other one uses fishing lures, which signify 'bait,' or 'drawing you in,'” he continued.

At afternoon's end, the center held an awards ceremony, and prizes were given to the outstanding submission in each category.

“I want to encourage people to come see this show, because it's such a wide range of work,” Schuster said. “Even if they don't really like contemporary art, there really is something here for everyone.”
