TUPPER LAKE -- A pickup truck crashed head on into three motorcycles, killing two riders on a road south of Tupper Lake Sunday afternoon.
Edward Schmieder, 44, of Attica was heading south in a 2001 Ford F-250 truck at about 12:30 p.m. when he veered into oncoming traffic and hit the last three motorcycles in a group of nine, state police said.
Steven Markham, 51, and Sandra Markham, 49, both of Locke, were killed and David Markham, 46, of Auburn was injured. Schmieder suffered a head injury and was taken by helicopter to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt. He was reported in fair condition Monday morning.
State police said David Markham was being treated at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, but the hospital would not release information on his condition Monday.
The investigation of the accident is continuing, state police said.
