Sheer meltdown

Whether it's hot or cold on Friday, audiences at Auburn Public Theater are going to melt from the sheer force of a punk and rock infusion from five bands headlined by recent rock Syracuse Area Music Award winners Stone Soul Foundation.
In addition to the hard rock meets the blues, metal and jazz mix that is Stone Soul Foundation, bands Castle Bravo, South Hall Riot, the Barettas and A Random Thought will give a glimpse into what the upstate New York music scene has to offer.

Ithaca band Castle Bravo offers up a marriage of punk, rock and metal with unique lead vocals and a heavy electric guitar that harkens back to the days of classic rock solos. The Barettas, also from Ithaca, will offer neurotic punk rock to energize the audience. South Hall Riot comes to the concert with a majority of band members from Auburn band Drop12. The band professes to “create music with catchy, meaningful lyrics, screaming vocals and heavy, melodic guitar riffs, break downs and crazy drumming.”

As the self-professed “little brother” band to Stone Soul Foundation, A Random Thought, from Auburn, will bring equally thoughtful selections to fans.

“We're art, you know. We have this tagline, like what is art? It's a random thought,” said guitarist Tony Scialla.

Scialla added that Stone Soul Foundation's members have organized Sonic Summer Meltdown to give Auburn music fans a fresh perspective.

“All of the bands on the bill are completely different from each other and individually have something going on,” Scialla said.

A Random Thought's music is psychedelic punk rock, jazzy and funky. Scialla and his bandmates call it “junk music,” but it sounds like anything but.

The band's drummer, Matt Horseler, is a former guitarist mainly influenced by old school rock who was heavily involved in the jam band scene.

He is known for his work in local band Ship of Fools. His work on the drums now tends toward jazz influences.

Bassist Matt Becker is into newer punk, and Scialla, on the guitar, is into classic punk and classic rock.

“We've all got a wide variety of influences. It doesn't seem like we'd all go together but we do. We try to be different. We try to be us and it definitely comes out in the music we do,” Scialla said.
