Video art, paintings and drawings will soon share wall space in the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center. They also share the distinction of being made in New York.

Marcus DeVoe's piece “Toe Shoes” will be on display in “Made in NY 2007,” at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center.
The center's annual exhibit was composed from more than 550 works by almost 300 artists in the state - the largest number of submissions in the show's history.
“One of the great things about this show is there's such a wide variety, from video art to traditional painting to mixed media,” said assistant director Stephanie Schuster.
Photographer Marcus DeVoe, of Auburn, will feature his photograph “Toe Shoes” in the exhibit. The work shows a translucent ribbon twisting atop dark rocks on Montauk Point. Its appearance is slightly abstract; the only absolute is the striking contrast between the rocks and the ribbon but even their forms are not immediately apparent. DeVoe hopes the image invites a variety of interpretations.
“I believe any piece of art is something that the viewer brings their own experiences to when they view it,” DeVoe said.
“Toe Shoes” - named for DeVoe's wife, a dancer - is not the first of his works to be featured in “Made in NY.” Although he has been practicing photography since 1971, DeVoe has only been submitting pictures to the exhibit for the last four years.
“I'm not trying to deliver any message with my art, other than sharing a hopefully beautiful experience or detail of nature,” he said.
Moravia painter Edward Heiple will show one of his works in “Made in NY” as well. Layers of pink, orange and blue forms collide and puncture each other to create “Abundance,” an acrylic work in which a ribcage form seems to appears amid the chaotic composition.
Heiple made the work on an acrylic sheet similar to Plexiglas, adding transparent paint, pencil and ink to both sides of the surface. The work took him about 3 months to complete.
“I was trying to create a metaphor for how we take in information and really operate with limited feedback, so this work mirrors that situation,” said Heiple, who has honed this technique since 1997.
“Abundance” marks Heiple's first work to be featured in the “Made in NY” show. He hopes that gallery visitors will experience in person the piece's unique interplay of color and light.
“I'm always looking for venues to show (my work) and I'm always delighted to find them,” he said.
The homegrown spirit of the “Made in NY” exhibit will also extend to the center's Summer Arts Festival, which will acquaint children and adults with the spectrum of arts, from calligraphy and music to martial arts and dance.
“There's so many different types of art to look at,” Schuster said. “Lots to see and lots to do.”
