Citizens need to decide on casino before politicians

Thursday, June 28, 2007 9:43 AM EDT

In reading various newspaper accounts of the latest Indian casino proposals - especially the ones about building a casino in Cayuga County or maybe even in the city of Auburn - it appears that there are many, many issues to be resolved before we place our bets.
We don't believe that anyone has asked these questions, which seem to us, to be some of the prime issues surrounding these controversial proposals:

€ Do you, the taxpayers of Cayuga County, want a casino to be built and located in Cayuga County?

And that, ladies and gentlemen, appears be the first priority and issue that needs to be addressed and resolved before anything gets underway anywhere.

€ The second question should be: If a casino is approved to be built in the county, do you approve of it being built in Auburn?

In fact, these questions should be put on a countywide ballot this November before any agreements are made with the Indians, the state, the federal government or some favorite lobbyists.

We, the county residents, are the ones who will have to put up with all the “stuff” - both positive and negative - that a casino brings.

We, therefore, should be the ones who decide on this political football first - and not our county Legislature or the city of Auburn or the various towns or the state or the feds.

And we don't believe that's too much to ask, do you?

It's your money.

" You have about a million people a short drive away. It's a smart thing to do. The sovereign nation, oooo, scary stuff. Yeah kill hundreds of jobs and the money they'd spend over these fears. A better idea would be to legalize gambling in New York and then Americans would compete. There would be choice and you could have some real tourism because the Finger Lakes is beautiful. I know where I live, we drive 5 hours to Vegas in massive traffic. There are probably 20 million people a five hour drive from Auburn, which obviously wouldn't be a Vegas but if you build it they will come. But the best bet is to legalize and let Americans benefit from this tourism. "

" First of all they will never bulid a casino. Any where in Cayuga county. There isn't enough people living here. That will blow hard earned money gambling. They sure have enough down state in Montacello. 90 minutes from NYC also. We wouyld end up with a sovereign nation. In our county with power over the citizens that will be nearby the 10,000 acres. Want to gamble, go to the Racino. I'm for fighting putting any land in trust. "

" Mr. Balyszak, It is nice that you offer your suggestions as to what questions should be asked. You haven't been involved with this claim from that beginning as many of us have. We have fought it for many years without the support of local or goverenment funding. It was fought with our own dollars. The casino issues shouldn't be put to a county wide vote as it isn't a county wide issue. The taxpayers in the claim area will ultimately bear the burden of the claim and the tribes desire to place lands into trust. Not those who live and reside in Fleming. "
