WATERTOWN - Three young children died on impact when their mother crashed trying to elude police late Friday, a medical examiner said.
The Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office said Mary Provo, 2; Nathaniel Parker, 6; and Tyler Parker, 10, died from blunt force trauma.
The ruling means there was nothing rescue workers could have done to save the children, Sheriff John Burns said Wednesday.
The mother, Lisa Parker, 29, of Weedsport, suffered a crushed pelvis and remains hospitalized at University Hospital, in Syracuse, where she has not regained consciousness.
She was listed in serious condition Tuesday. Parker was pregnant and her fetus did not survive.
Parker and three of her children were headed on a camping trip to Cape Vincent on Lake Ontario Friday night. Parker's boyfriend, John Provo, was following about 20 minutes behind in another car with Parker's other child, Serena Parker, 4.
She was pulled over for driving erratically on a Jefferson County highway. As the deputy got out of his car, she sped off. Burns said the deputy chased Parker and speeds reached 70 miles per hour, but the deputy backed off after getting the license plate number. The deputy has not been identified.
Parker hit a utility pole, severing the pole and splitting the car in two. She was thrown from the car. The children died strapped in their seats inside the car.
Police learned that Parker's driver's license had been suspended in January 2006 but they have not determined why she sped off. Burns said the investigation was continuing. No charges have been filed against Parker, but she could be charged with criminally negligent homicide.
“We haven't been able to talk to her yet,” the sheriff said.
Burns said as soon as doctors say she is well enough, investigators will meet with Parker at the hospital.
