ALBANY - State officials have issued a statewide air quality advisory for Tuesday, warning of high levels of the pollutant ozone.
The advisory from the health and conservation departments will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. It's issued when meteorologists predict pollution levels exceeding 100 on the Air Quality Index.
Automobile exhaust and out-of-state emissions are the primary causes of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog, and they constitute the most serious air pollution problems in the Northeast, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said.
Summer heat also can lead to formation of ground-level ozone, a component of smog. Going indoors reduces exposure, and outdoor levels tend to decrease at night.
People with respiratory disease, do vigorous work or exercise outdoors, especially children, should consider limiting activity when ozone levels are highest, generally afternoon and early evening, the agency said.
