Dollar Night beers are a tragedy waiting to happen

Baseball - Our nation's pastime. An American tradition that has been carried out for years. A game bringing fathers and sons closer together in the wide open fields of serenity. A game that has been in the hearts of Auburnians since Falcon Park's construction in 1995. Falcon Park has become a place for friends to congregate during the hot summer nights.
A place for drunks to drink endlessly until their eyes glaze over and their ability to drive is so drastically impaired that they hop into their cars and drive off into the night.

As a long-time guest of the Auburn Doubledays, I have attended a majority of home games since the field's opening 12 years ago (I was 5).

Since then I have seen a repetition of events every Thursday night, aka Dollar Thursday, people intoxicated to levels severely above the legal blood-alcohol content of .08 and driving off as if they are completely sober with the police staff, who walk the park and direct people through the crosswalks, stand by and do nothing.

People's lives are being put at risk because of the drunks who are driving these dangerous machines are too impaired to even know their right from left.

And why is this happening? Because the Doubledays management continues to sell dollar draft beers to everyone with a wristband so they can drink in innumerable quantities. I have personally seen one person drink 15 beers in one night.

This is ridiculous. Dollar Thursday is a tradition for the Doubledays so keep it going, all I ask is that people's lives are taken into consideration and the dollar beers be eliminated and charged regular prices on Thursdays. Or, monitor a person's intake of alcohol and cut them off at a certain point.

The more drunk drivers on the road, the more lives threatened. What will it take for people to listen, a drunk driver to kill a young boy?

Should we wait for a tragedy to occur, or attempt to prevent one? One less drunk driver is a van-filled family alive.

" It's difficult because nobody would go, and sad to say, if you limit the number of beers one can buy, you're also limiting the amount of money that can be taken in. All the money isn't worth potentially losing a life, but that chance is taken every day by every establishment that sells alcohol. It's up to the individual drinker to be responsible... and the servers can refuse to serve a person who is visibly intoxicated. "

" Why wouldn't it work G Money? Buy a beer, stamp a hole; how is that difficult? Not everyone is smart enough to bring a designated driver, but I applaud those who do. "

" This could happen at home or a ball game. People drink and drive, it's life. It sucks, but people do it. Eliminating it at the ball park will only hurt the Doubledays. It's not the beer, it's the stupid people that are the problem. There is no system that will work so i don't even know why you would suggest some type of bracelet with punch outs..wouldn't work..I bet that place would only have 100 people in it at the most if the $1 beers were taken away. People need to be more responsible. I have had 12 beers at the game, but had a ride from a sober person. That's the simple solution. "

" The problem is not the dollar beer, it's the people driving drunk. Even if you see someone getting really loaded in the ball park, that doesn't mean he or she doesn't have a designated driver to drive home. Don't punish everyone for the crimes of a few. Have the cops conduct breathalyzer tests in the parking lot on anyone who seems over the limit. "

" I happen to know someone that goes to the Double Days on Thursdays for that specific reason- $1 beers. She can't just buy a 6 pack and drink it at home, she has to get drunk there and drive home like that. She acts like a slob too when she is drunk. Just buy a 6 pack and drink it at home- save yourself the embarrassment and help prevent another tragedy that can be caused by driving drunk. "

" He's right. I have enjoyed many dollar beer nights, but I have seen others enjoy them more than I. The ballpark needs to come up with a system of monitoring the number of beers someone can have. Maybe punching a hole in the wrist band or stamping the buyers hand for each beer. Bars and clubs are liable so why shouldn't the ballpark be? "

" If you see someone visibly intoxicated getting into a car, tell one of the cops. There always seem to be plenty around. I would strongly advise NOT to take beer out of the park. I grew up in Auburn and currently live in Oneonta. They are lucky if 300 people show up to a game here. The one complaint I've heard most often is lack of adult beverages. "
