The father who lost two sons in a car collision Friday is calling for vehicles to follow their funeral procession in honor of their love for cars.
Mark Parker, of Baldwinsville, is asking anyone with a sports car, flashy ride, newer car, truck, motorcycle, and “pretty much anything I can get a hold of” to accompany the mourners for Nathaniel and Tyler Parker from the Falardeau Funeral Home to the Riverview Cemetery.
“I just want my boys to be remembered for who they were and what they liked, not the decision their mother made that cost them their lives,” Parker said.
The boys' mother, Lisa Parker, was pulled over by police Friday night, but fled before a Jefferson County Sheriff deputy could question her. Her Honda Accord then struck a pole and her children were trapped inside the wreckage. Another of her children, Mary Provo, 2, also died in the crash.
Calling hours for Nathaniel, 6, and Tyler, 10, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 93 Downer St. in Baldwinsville.
Their funerals will be at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Parker estimates the drive will take about an hour.
The community has already promised their support, and Parker estimates more than 1,000 vehicles will give his children a special send off. The boys would play a video game that sparked their interest in cars.
While the family is coping as best they can, Parker's father is having a hard time. He was the last to see the boys before they left for what was supposed to be a camping trip to Lake Ontario.
After the accident, Lisa Parker was thrown from the car. She was upgraded to serious condition, from critical, Monday at University Hospital in Syracuse.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate why Lisa Parker eluded the police.
The 29-year-old Weedsport woman was driving with a suspended license. State DMV records stated Parker's license was suspended in January 2006 because her insurance lapsed.
Lisa Parker's live-in boyfriend, John Provo, was driving behind her in another car with Parker's other child, Serena Parker, 4.
Mark Parker was separated from his children's mother for three years and the divorce was in the process of being finalized, he said.
Last year, he unsuccessfully tried to get custody of their three children.
The family has to foot the bill out of pocket because insurance won't cover the $20,000 funeral costs, plus headstones, because Lisa Parker fled from police and did not have insurance, he said.
