BUFFALO - A 13-year-old girl accused of torching the home of her sleeping family was charged with murder and arson after a relative was killed by flames early Friday morning.
“There was a trail of some kind of flammable liquid (the suspect) used on the first floor,” Deputy Fire Commissioner Patrick Lewis told The Buffalo News.
The liquid was apparently spread through the house, including the kitchen, outside a bedroom and in a dining room, he said.
Flames were leaping from the windows of the two-story house when firefighters arrived at about 4:15 a.m.
Vincent Fairfax, 43, the girl's step-grandfather, was found dead by firefighters who rescued two adults, two children and a dog from the second-floor porch, Lewis said. The dead man's wife, Gennie Booker-Fairfax, and four other family members escaped from the first floor.
Lewis said Fairfax apparently tried to get out of the house by a different route than his wife and didn't make it.
